Everyone experiences tough times in their life. You will at some point experience setbacks, loss, and difficulties. You might get caught up in a natural disaster or suffer the fallout of an economic downturn. Whether you have lost your job, or some other crisis that has turned your life upside down, you will need help and support to get you through. You need to regain momentum.
Here are four things you can do right now to help get yourself back on track.
1. Commit to your health and wellbeing
Self-care is vital when you are recovering from any major life stress. It’s a time when the absolute fundamentals of life need your attention. So make sure you are eating a healthy diet. Do you have a favorite green juice or super smoothie? Make that your priority to start the day.
Commit to getting some exercise. If you can’t manage the gym, get outdoors and walk, borrow a friend or neighbor’s dog if you have to. Just make sure you get your body moving every day.
Avoid sugar and stimulants and make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Look after Number One!
2. Make Sure You Have a Support Network
You need your friends most in times of crisis. Chances are you will be flooded with offers of help. Make a list of errands or chores or favorite foods so you can give concerned friends and family some guidance on how they can best support you through this time.
Let your employer know you going through a tough time. They may offer flexible working hours or allow you to work from home.
3. Get clarity on what you can control
When the tough times hit, you’ll probably feel overwhelmed, helpless, even paralyzed.
It can be useful to sit down and work out exactly what you can and can’t change or influence in your circumstances. Make a list of the things you have immediate control over. Focus on those. Make peace with the things you can’t influence and cut yourself some slack. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough.
4. Write it down
Writing is a powerful way to start to capture your story. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or written for anyone else but yourself. Once you get the worries and thoughts out of your head, you can start to make sense of what has happened to you.
Write on a computer, on your tablet or in an old-fashioned journal. It doesn’t matter what method you use but writing your story will help to start your healing journey and get on with your life.
