It’s easy to keep your energy and motivation high at the beginning of any project, whether it’s a work project or a healthier lifestyle. When you’ve just begun, you’re enthusiastic and everything seems possible. But then maybe you hit a road bump. Maybe there’s a hold-up or something didn’t come through when it was expected. Maybe you’re just tired.
When you feel your momentum start to slacken, there are plenty of things you can do to re-energize and get back on track again. Here are five things you can do right now.
1. Check-in on Your Goals
Sometimes you can set goals that are just a bit too ambitious for where you are right now. Revisit your goals and see how you’re doing. Did you set smaller milestones to help you track progress? Are you remembering to celebrate all your successes, big and small?
Make sure your goals are achievable in the short, medium and long term, otherwise you risk getting discouraged and losing your momentum.
2. Reframe Your Missteps
If you have had a setback or a failure, try to reframe it as a learning opportunity. Don’t allow a mistake to define you or your project. If things aren’t going as you planned, see what you can do to course-correct and get refocused on your goal. Try thinking laterally – maybe your failure can give you an insight into how to approach your project differently.
3. Give Yourself Rewards
Celebrating success is important. You need positive reinforcement to keep your motivation and energy high.
Every time you hit a milestone, reward yourself. Share your success with family and friends or write a social media post if that’s appropriate. Choose a reward that is meaningful for you, and get those positive endorphins flowing!
4. Find Your Passion
It’s so much easier to keep your momentum high when you’re doing something you love. If you’re trying to lose weight, focus on exercise activities and foods that you enjoy.
Find the parts of your work project that call to your heart. Maybe you enjoy creating presentations or spreadsheets. Focus on the things you enjoy about your work and throw yourself into it.
5. Build A Support Team
It can be hard to keep going when you feel you’re doing it alone. Surround yourself with positive supportive people who will help you celebrate your success and hold you up when things don’t go so well. Family, friends, and colleagues will all be rooting for you and will help you over the finish line.
