The power of routine really can’t be understated. The internet is full of articles about the routines of the rich and famous. That’s all well and good, but the real power of routine is finding one that works for you and addresses your specific needs. Check out these helpful tips if you want to find a daily routine that works for you.
Make a list of everything you need to do daily. This is just a brain dump. Don’t analyze your thinking, just jot down everything you can think of at the time. Your chosen routines should address activities on this list.
2. Start in The Morning
Adding activities to your morning routine is the easiest way to get started. Most of us already have several things we do each morning, so adding a few steps is relatively easy. It also helps get your day off to a good start.
3. Focus on One or Two Changes
Don’t try and overhaul your entire routine in one go. Focus on adding a couple of activities or actions at a time. This way, you can give these new steps your full focus, and building your new routines will seem gradual as opposed to overwhelming.
4. Start Writing
A morning journal session is an important part of a daily routine. Even starting with a single sentence a day will help build your writing routine. Your journaling will also act as a catalyst for the rest of your routine, as you can use it to plan or assess your new activities.
5. Honor Personal Preference
Starting a new routine is hard enough; you shouldn’t have to fight against your personal preference. If you are a night owl, then work late. If you find you are more productive at certain times of the day, then make sure your routines match with that.
6. Make Time for Activity
It is a good idea to add some sort of activity into your daily routine. You don’t have to choose some hardcore exercise you dread, though. Find an activity or exercise that you enjoy and try to incorporate it daily. Your health and energy levels will improve.
7. Self-Care Matters
On top of exercise, you will want to focus on other areas of self-care as well. Again, honor your personal preference. If you love to meditate, add that into your routine. However, if you just like to recharge by watching an hour of TV, do that. Whichever way you disconnect and unwind is up to you, just make time for it.
8. Tell the People You Love
Tell the people that matter about your new changes to your routine. This will help ensure they aren’t unwittingly doing things that sabotage you. It also helps to build a support system that you can fall back on in times of need.
9. Assess and Adjust
There is no benefit to a daily routine if it isn’t working for you. Once a month (or even week) do a self-check-in. Figure out what parts of your routine are working for you and which aren’t (great use for a journal btw). Make adjustments based on that info and move forward.
