Self-improvement is a concept that is closely related to Self Help, Self motivation and Personal Development. Whilst there are differences between these three concepts, they are closely interlinked.
Any definition of self improvement has one basic pre-requisite. Whatever process is followed, it will be by your own efforts that goals are achieved and not by others!
Learning by your own efforts
Self-improvement is the process of learning new things on your own that make you a more skilled, able or rounded person. It could be the improvement of your knowledge, status, or character but it will be by your own efforts. It almost always starts with self-awareness in the first instance and subsequently the ability to transform your habits. Life only changes because of the improvements we make by the actions we take.
Self-improvement is characterized by the concept of constant change or continuous improvement, the Kaizen concept. To be successful, “Become addicted to constant and never-ending self-improvement,” Anthony J. D’Angelo or understand that “My life constantly under construction. There’s always something to improve,” Anonymous.
Take Action, Start Now!
The key to making changes for the better, to improve your inner self, is to take action and the best time to start is now. The motto is, Take Action, Start Now! Using the tried and tested processes of Observe, Plan, Do, Reflect, Act/Adjust, can assist you in meeting your goals. However, much assistance or coaching you have in the self-improvement process, ultimately it will be down to you and your actions which will define your success. “Do something today that your future self will thank you for,” Anonymous, “Improvement begins with I”, Anonymous“ and Don’t compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to the person from yesterday.” Anonymous
Self-awareness is starting point for self-improvement. Take responsibility for how you live your life. Without being self-aware enough to take at least some degree of responsibility over your life, self-improvement is nearly impossible. “Self-knowledge is the beginning of self-improvement”, Balthasar Gracian“
Define your goals
It is unfortunate to note that many people go through life without any clear destination in mind. However, any journey of self improvement requires us to identify our goals, values, and priorities in life in the first instance. Once we know our goals, we can plan our course to achieve them. “When everything seems like an uphill struggle, just think of the view from the top”, Anonymous
Changing your micro habits
Your day to day habits do matter. Just as we should focus on changing our thoughts, we should also focus on exploring new habits. As the saying goes, “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.” Sometimes we won’t know what the correct course of action is until we have experimented with different things. Changing habits is essential for learning more about yourself and continuing to grow as a person.
Self-improvement is not something that can be learned and absorbed overnight. In my mind, it is a never-ending process. “Excellence is not a destination; it is a continuous journey that never ends”, Brian Tracy.
